40. Tulipa grengiolensis

A very rare tulip found near the town of Grengiols in southern Switzerland (elevation 1,000m/3,300ft). T. grengiolensis was once on the verge of extinction but is now thriving in a small protected area. Botanists are still trying to determine if this is a true wild tulip. It may be an old garden variety that took up residence in natural areas.
