The red or red-yellow flowers of Greigii tulip—shown here growing at 1,300m/4,300ft in the Tulkibas district in southern Kazakhstan—are the size of your fist. Locals often sell the flowers along the sides of roads that may once have been part of the Silk Road, the network of trade routes that connected Europe and the Far East for hundreds of years.
